There are so many different projects mixed media artists can tackle when it comes to altering baskets. Let's take another look at Easter basket alterations.
Embracing the holidays through art projects is fun for children and adults, alike. So, it only makes sense to have a wide variety of projects to choose from. This project involves another look at Easter basket alteration. Turn “drab” to “fab” in minutes. This project is great for bringing spring accents to home décor, as well.
For this project, you will need the following materials:
- A plain basket or a basket that needs some refurbishing
- White spray paint
- Pink acrylic paint
- Lavender acrylic paint
- Mint green acrylic paint
- Yellow acrylic paint
- Sponge brushes (four)
- Cardboard box (larger than the basket)
- Small containers of water (four)
- Glitter (pastel colored)
- Spray adhesive
- Pastel colored ribbons
- Pastel colored ribbon roses
- Wire cutters
- Scissors
- Hot glue sticks
- Glue gun
Follow these steps to complete this mixed media altered art project: (Note: Because drying time is involved with this project, set aside several different days for completion. Speed up drying time with a heat gun or hair dryer.)
- Place the basket into the cardboard box. Spray several coats of white spray paint on to the basket. Depending on how dark the basket is, this could take many coats. Be sure to dry the basket between coats. Allow the spray paint to dry completely before moving on to the next step. Put the cardboard box aside for future spray paint projects.
- Using the various colored acrylic paints and the sponge brushes, add patterns and accents along the edges and the handle of the basket. Allow the paint to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
- Place the basket back into the box again. Spray adhesive along the rim of the basket and dust it with glitter. Shake off access and spray the rim again to seal in the glitter. Allow to dry completely, and then spray it once more to ensure a good hold. Allow spray to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
- Wrap ribbon around the handle in a “candy cane” pattern. Use hot glue to secure each end.
- Attach ribbon roses in various to various areas of the rim of the basket, as well as the handle using hot glue.
That is all there is to this project! When you are finished, you have a beautiful gift or a beautiful accent piece for your home. If this is an accent piece for your home, fill it with some grass and painted wooden eggs. When Easter passes, use this basket to hold seeds, small gardening tools, gardening gloves, and small plant pots.
