This kids craft project not only enhances children's love for dressing up, but it also is a great opportunity to provide a lesson in recycling.

Playing dress-up and little girls (and boys, too, for that matter) go hand-in-hand. So, why not take that opportunity to create some pieces of mixed-media art with your children that will aid in that type of imaginary play? Not only will this kids craft project be using household items, but it will also present an opportunity to educate about recycling.

Materials:

  • Cardboard tubes (paper towel, toilet paper, gift wrap, etc.)
  • Scissors (be sure they are very sharp, and used with parental supervision)
  • Hot glue
  • Hot glue gun (to be used with parental supervision)
  • Acrylic paint
  • Beads (assorted colors)
  • Sequins (assorted colors)
  • Glitter (in shakers, assorted colors)
  • Small containers of water
  • White gesso or acrylic paint
  • Decoupage medium
  • White craft glue
  • Paint or sponge brushes
  • Buttons (assorted shapes, sizes, and colors)
  • Magazine cutouts
  • Newspaper

Instructions:

  1. Cover your work surface completely with newspaper, and set out all of the materials listed above. (Note: Tape the corners of the newspaper down if you are concerned about it slipping out of place.)
  2. Cut the cardboard tubes to the desired width, and don’t forget to cut a slit along one side of the cardboard so the bracelet can be put on. (Note: use a ruler to help keep the width of the bracelet consistent all the way around.)
  3. Paint the inside and outside using the white gesso or acrylic paint. Allow the piece to dry completely before moving on to the next step. (Note: you can speed drying time through use of a heat gun or hair dryer.)
  4. Collage over the bangle bracelet so it is either fully or sparsely covered depending on desired look.
  5. Paint on decorative shapes or, before adding collage work, paint the entire piece a solid color. For a dramatic look, paint the edges of the bangle bracelet using black or a very dark color.
  6. Embellish the piece using the remaining materials. There is no right or wrong choice for which materials to use, how much to use, or which materials to omit.
  7. Cover over the entire piece with decoupage medium to completely seal the work. Allow the piece to dry for 24 hours before wearing it or else it will get ruined.

Variations:

  • Find bracelets that are thick and plastic at thrift stores, flea markets, and yard sales to alter and embellish.
  • Use smaller cardboard tube cuttings to create charms and pendants.

When creating these mixed-media cardboard bangle bracelets with your children, explain the importance of recycling and ask them what other household items would be fun for craft projects. Also, keep in mind that they may not be interested in using all of the materials you have gathered for this kids craft project. Let them lead the creative process, and they will be more open to the learning experience.
