Using leather dye in mixed-media art projects brings new color options forward in a vibrant and easy manner. Give it a try!

When working with wood during mixed media art projects, there are times when artists want the natural wood grains to show through. At the same time, they do not want to use stain and they do not want to use varnish. However they do want to use color. Seems complicated and nitpicky, right?

How do mixed media artists solve this problem when working with wood projects?

Through use of leather dyes, mixed media artists have the opportunity to color the wood they are working with and still allow for the natural grains and finishes to show through. Leather dye soaks into the wood quickly; it is as easy to work with as paint, and it dries quicker than staining.

Simply brush the leather dye directly on to the wood in the same manner you would when staining. If you would prefer to wipe the leather dye onto the wood, that will also work for this project. Now it is time for the experimentation: try adding the leather dye, and then wiping it off for a lightly colored look. Next, try layering the leather dye on to the wood for darker, richer color. In some cases, laying the color on will create a vibrant tone as well.

Pick a piece of wood that is scrap or a “throwaway” piece of wood to experiment with. Work with as many colors as possible on this scrap wood in order to learn which looks can be achieved, and which colors will work best for the mixed media art project you have in mind. This scrap wood will also allow for practicing which methods of leather dye staining works best for you, either brushing or wiping. It will not be long until a comfort level is reached.

Have fun with this!

The ultimate goal is to find a new twist to working with wood projects, and experiment with a new medium at the same time. There are solutions to every mixed media art project problem and this one will lead you in the direction you want for your wood projects. There is also opportunity for dying picture frames and furnishings in addition to working with mixed-media art projects. Let your imagination run wild!
