Altered Art Project: Painting

An Altered Book and a Painting in One

© Jennifer Hollowell

This week's altered art project consists of two projects in one: an altered book and a painting.

Mixing two projects in one has been a long time favorite of many, so let's talk about how to accomplish this using an altered book and a painting. Here we go!

Determine your theme:

Before gathering supplies, unless you want this to be a "random" project, it's important to determine the theme of your finished work. Decide on colors, patterns, quotations needed, and so on.

Gather your materials:

Putting it all together:

  1. Cover your workspace with newspaper and spread out your supplies.
  2. Layer three shades of the same color on to your canvas. This can be accomplished a vairety of different ways. One example is to cover the entire canvas with the lightest color, add the second color leaving the center untouched and add the third color to the edge and then blend everything together.
  3. Set the painting aside to dry.
  4. Cut the thin brochure so it'll sit in the middle of the painting without covering the entire canvas. (Keep it to scale.)
  5. Cover over each page spread of the brochure with mixed art paper.
  6. Embellish each page using stickers, collage material, quotations and more mixed paper. To keep the pages from waving, use a glue stick to affix all of your page elements. Add paper to the front cover, but don't embellish it yet.
  7. Punch a hole along the edge in the center of the front and back cover.
  8. Thread the ribbon through and tie it into a bow so the knot sits on the front cover.
  9. Affix your altered book to the center of the painting at a slight angle using gel medium.
  10. Surround the painting with gems and stickers using gel medium.
  11. Embellish the front cover in the same theme as the rest of the book and the painting.

You can view this finished project here. (And, yes, this is for sale in my etsy shop.)
